Coming to you from the land of the free, home of the brave - at times politically incorrect -
Well, Mohammed Bouyeri wasn't impressed with the concept of free speech. Free speech is a troublesome concept for those who have weak arguments.
From the Declaration of Independence of the United States "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness - " along with first amendment "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peacefully to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States and one of the fifty-six signatories of the Declaration of Independence at one point states that "But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." That is naturally how it should be but the murder of Theo van Gogh by Mohammeh Bouyeri tells us that it is not always so. One can only speculate how Jefferson would have viewed this assault on free speech but it is clear that his view on religion was that it should be practiced as a mental exercise.
